Periodontics

At Westfield Smiles Dental Health and Wellness Center, our doctors and staff have experience with periodontal (gum) diseases, ranging from slight inflammation to serious damage or tooth loss. Our comprehensive periodontal care can help control the disease(s), and help you improve your oral health.

Periodontal Disease

We treat periodontal disease. We diagnose and prevent problems with the supportive tissues surrounding the teeth. These tissues can become susceptible to disease if they are exposed to plaque and tartar. The longer that bacteria is allowed to thrive along the gum line, the larger the chance of gum line infection. Signs of periodontal disease include receding gum lines, bad breath, and loose teeth. If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, you may be in need of medication or a deep cleaning in order to combat an infection. Depending on how far the disease has progressed, a dentist might even recommend surgical treatment. Flap surgeries and tissue grafts are used to repair and regenerate tissue lost to periodontitis.

Bacteria in the gum line can also cause a problem known as gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease treated under the umbrella of periodontics. If your gums are inflamed or prone to bleeding, you should seek treatment right away. Though initially not a serious condition, gingivitis can grow worse over time. If the problem is allowed to persist, it can lead to tooth loss and the breakdown of connective tissue.
